We’ve allowed eligible 5th year players play for at least 30+ years. Prior to 2020, it was extremely rare that you had a 5th year player with eligibility (unless they rec’d a medical red shirt). With the blanket 5th year provided to everyone, there was no longer an issue with eligibility and thus anyone that was turned back (medical, academic, etc.) can play. Navy has historically done this as well (e.g. McCallum as another poster noted). Navy has recently denied eligibility for some players (Tago Smith and Busick). That coupled with the recent lack of success in CIC games and navy is using this as the excuse de jour. it’s no surprise Wagner picked this up as the athletic department has been whining about this for weeks.

Regarding commitment after a cadets 3rd year, Ken McMillan reported a couple of weeks ago that Alston’s departure had not been cleared by the Academy.

Everyone at Army is required to play some type of sport while a cadet. Either varsity, club or intramural. If a cadet is still in school and eligible to play by NCAA standards then why wouldn’t they continue to play varsity sports? Just because navy has decided to not allow some of their players do this doesn’t mean they are right. As already mentioned, navy used to do this when they had midshippeople in the same situation such as McCallum.

I think there are 2 things driving the larger numbers. The 5th year of eligibility due to COVID and the 4-game redshirt rule. If a kid played a couple games as a plebe kn the past and then was a Dec grad for some reason they would still be out of eligibility in the past where now they aren’t.

The idea that navy not allowing players to do this anymore isn’t an Army issue. It’s navy being stupid.

Now, there is a big difference in my mind with someone that has to do another semester regardless of football status and someone that goes home for a semester for the express reason of playing another football season as many air force players did. I would not be in favor of Army players going home for a semester for no other reason than playing another season.

Reporters are not reporters anymore. They are all opinionators. Journalism is dead. These people try to change your mind by infusing your mind with their own opinions or they are paid off by others to state their opinions to the payee who then forces the thoughts to you second hand. It is all a game of infiltration. Wagner is either one or the other of these people. They are a dime a dozen out there.
Talk radio, TV or the web has just made the know-it-alls more relevant in their own minds.
