Conference?

Post by hiangle6 »

Looks like there may be openings in the PAC 12. What say you all? Would you want to join a conference if it was an automatic qualifier? Particularly if the league had Cal, Stanford, SD State, and UNLV. Travel issues be damned. I am kidding, ftr.

Please , no west coast conference. Travel costs and pure fatigue for our cadets with all that travel which would kill not only our w-l record but probably kill our cadets.
Nice thought if we wee located in Southern California.
6,000 miles to and from the west coast every other week. Ah, NO Although we are considered America's Team this is a bit too much.

The only conference I want to see at West Point is a daily CONFERENCE of our coaches to produce a winning team.

We could just move the whole Academy out to California. Plenty of room out at Fort Hunter Liggett. Then joining the PAC-12 would be easy.

I didn't even know they played football out there. I'm still waiting on the SEC invite.

Mark my words, these changes happening out west now are going to impact us in the very near future.

Here is my logic, which is based on conversations with high level peeps

The Pac-12 is toast. The four remaining schools, Stanford, Cal, Ore. State and Wash. State, can only join the Mountain WEst conference. Arizona and Ariz. State an Utah are going to the Big 12.

Here is the future. Clemson, Fla. State and Miami desperately want out of the ACC and into the SEC or Big 10....the Big 10 now has 18 schools with Wash and Oregon. They can take two more....but I dont see either Clemson or Fla. State getting in...actually maybe not Miami either.....actually I think it might be Virginia, North Carolina, or Duke.....if that happens, Clemson and Fla. State beg the SEC to let them in, which I think is probable.

That leaves a bunch of orphans, almost all on the East Coast and some Northeastern schools like Syracuse, BC and Pitt....my guess UCONN wants in....so we go back to the Big East for all s ports for these programs and they create some kind of football conference with other ACC orphans.

Where does Army fit in? Big question, but no one wants to be left out of the potential to play in the national championship series and Army only qualifies as a member of a conference. So, my guess is that they beg into the Big East (football only) and I would not be surprise if Navy (football only) comes along....

BOTTOM LINE -- Something is going to happen.

I’ve probably said this on here before, but I could see us latch on with the ACC leftovers. A conference with BC, Syracuse, Pitt, Duke, Wake, Ga Tech, Navy and maybe Va Tech and Louisville. UNC and Virginia go to the Big 10. Miami, Clemson, FSU, and NC State go to the SEC. Maybe Miami and ND go to the Big 10 as well and either Va Tech or Louisville going to the SEC instead of Miami. This would be a pretty good conference for Army with regional rivals and some regular, academically inclined opponents (Wake, Ga Tech, and Duke) that make sense. We’d sell more tickets for home games, get more TV money, and get good visibility in the SE, one of our most important recruiting regions. Assuming an 8-game conference schedule, that leaves 3 non-conference games (Air Force takes the 4th spot) would still allow us to play in Texas regularly. And I think we can be competitive against most of those programs most of the time.

Definitely going to impact us at some point. The ACC is locked in until 2036 unless the Grant of Rights gets challenged in courts. Plus there's a $120M exit fee. These are two major factors for FSU which wants out. I think FSU and Clemson are the best fits for the SEC. Miami maybe but probably a better fit in the Big 10. NC State never makes it to the SEC though. Even though GA Tech isn't a fit I could see them going SEC because Sankey values geographic contiguousness.

Money is going to ruin the college game. Tom Brady and Politics already ruined the NFL. At some point there will be one huge conference of like 64 teams which I think is the number. Then half of those would make the playoff and you get a 5 round 32 team college playoff of nothing but super schools.

I say this because I think that is what will maximize the profit motive for TV views. Every week that one of these top tier teams plays and FCS school or low level FBS schools is a lost opportunity for revenue. It's just a question of which schools, how many and how do they divide the money which will have to be evenly like the NFL. Then they can self govern and build in parity which is the NFL model that, like it or not, is ridicuously valuable.

Just my two cents. But I agree change is coming for everyone.
