Who Has Seen the New Offense?

Anyone been to any of the scrimmages? Anyone seen the new offense at work? Does it have a chance? I gotta be honest - I am not happy about not running under center.

Isaw the spring scrimmage. I was far from impressed with what I saw. It may be a long and devastating experiment.

I also am worried about our quarterback not being under center; however, I didn't think that we moved the ball the past two years as well as the previous three years. Maybe we do need to change.

I don't know enough about the game to determine if our recent struggles were due to play calling, offensive line inconsistency, injuries, rules changes (cut block limitations), or a combination of all four.

I love Monken and I have loved Army football since I was a child. I hope that the new offense will work.

I thought the article below on As For Football did a nice job laying out WHY Army moved awa from the flexbone. I never understood why the rule change had any impact on the FB dive and now it makes more sense. Many on this board have probably seen the piece, but I thought it was worth sharing.

As you said, AFF does an excellent technical job of explaining what Jeff's likely rationale for the switch from under-center was. Basically, they explain the micro-effects of the new cut block rules on both our inside and outside run game. After AFF's diagnosis, I thought their final quote was perfect:

"Trying to play the game that they want with the rules that they wish they had was never gonna work."

Frankly, now I'm less skeptical about changing to the new offense immediately, because it seems more and more that we were forced into a corner and Jeff did what he thought was necessary. I'm also more pissed than ever at Toddfu**ingBerry, who was at the center of that absolutely unnecessary rule change. There's certainly no compelling medical evidence that cut blocking caused more injuries, so his only arguable motive to ramrod this change (which hamstrung our offense) was further revenge against Army for his firing. I'll hate that sorry sob till he dies...

I googled Todd Berry to see where he is now and how he has done since leaving Army.

I noticed google suggested todd berry elvis impersonator before todd berry American football coach. Perhaps there is a message there.

From a link to Footballscoop.com, I leaned that Berry has been the executive director of the AFCA since 2016. He plans to leave that position in January, 2024.

Todd's record in his three head coaching jobs 57-102 and his bowl record is 0-1.

Illinois State: 24-24 (Div 1-AA playoffs twice, losing in semifinals and losing in first round)
Army: 5-35
ULM: 28-43 (lost Independence Bowl in 2012)

Has not coached since 2015.

New offense . . . we all just have to wait and see. I am hopeful that we keep some under-center jumbo plays and mix them in liberally as a change-up. Fullback, fullback follow. My number one concern is the snap. When the QB is looking at the ball, he is not looking at the field. Under center, snap is about as quick and secure as it can be and QB reading the whole way. Understand rule changes, just hope our OL can get the job done. Penetration into the backfield messes up everything and can result in disaster. Army success has been predicated on securing the ball/minimizing turn-overs, and possessing the ball -- possessing the ball is the whole objective. Ambivalent about changes.

I took a look at Nebraska Kearny’s run/pass mix last year. On average, they ran 61 plays per game with 46 being runs and 16 being passes. This makes the run/pass ratio 75%/25%.

Coastal Carolina (which some have compared our new O to) ran 67 plays per game on average last year with a 39/28 run/pass split. This equates to a 58%/42% ratio. Call it 60/40. If Army hits this mix in a game it is because we are in trouble.

Last year, Army ran an average of 63 plays with a 54/9 run/pass split. That equates to a 86%/14% ratio.

If Army goes all the way to Nebraska Kearny’s run/pass ratio with the same number of plays per game as Army had last year, we would see another 7 passes per game. A significant increase, but still mot throwing it all over the place. If I had to bet, my money would be on something like an 80/20 split over the season, which would be 4 passes per game.
