Joe is spot-on. All phases of the game look bad at this point. Has Monken lost this team…because Joe was right to point out they look listless. Have they given up on the coaches and this experiment?

Re: UMASS highlight reel from the game.
Well losing the team is really my biggest concern. Because I don't know how you get them back. Imagine being Jakobi Buchanan and you go from having a clear role and being a difference maker on a winning team to this crap show where you only see the field a few plays a game. How do you think he feels about it? How do guys on defense feel when they consistently see the offense get shut out? Does it matter to make a goal line stand when you know your teammates can't get it done? How about all those scout team players you need every week to give you the right look. Are they killing themselves when we go out and lay goose eggs each weekend? I mean it's tough enough that you don't dress or play or travel on Saturdays and now you give all that time and effort so that you can lose to UMASS?
I mean as a coach you can only do so much to get kids to buy in. And at this point many of them are drawing their own conclusions. It's one thing to get dominated by LSU it's a whole other thing losing to UMASS the worst defense in the country all because your OC didn't know how to call run plays inside the 10 yard line. These kids are smart. They know. And that's why I'm adamant that Monken has to make changes now. You go another full season with this and it's really gonna get rough.

Re: UMASS highlight reel from the game.
wow. the highlight reel is pretty useful. One of the things that leaps out to me is the degree to which Army's inability to run right on offense, seems to be impacting the Defense' preparedness.
The play design on that first interception is very odd (3:06 mark in the highlight video). I was blaming Daily for that interception, but now I think it is the OC's fault. Appears to be a designed one-receiver pass play with the QB rolling out from behind his protection to the boundary. The play action/roll-out takes away any chance at a quick hitter for the 2-yard gain for the 1st down on 4th and 2 and the formation for a short-yardage play indicates QB run or pass. You can do one or the other, play action or roll-out, and get off a quick pass, but not both, so why only one receiver? The O-line nor anyone in the backfield really moves to block the QB action to the right. I can't really see that play ever working unless you have a huge advantage in receiver speed. Daily has no choice but to throw the ball there on 4th and two once he begins the roll out; whether an INT or not, it is going to be a turnover on downs. Interestingly the Defense was overloaded to the boundary side of the field. Army probably should have called a timeout there or audibled to a run left. Really difficult to run pass plays into a defensive overload with one receiver. Am I not seeing that right?
That play: bad play call, bad play design, failure to note the Defensive alignment all on the coaching staff.

Re: UMASS highlight reel from the game.
That's a pretty good assessment of that play in my opinion. You have a balanced formation offensively and the defense matches that. The safety and the corner both read it well and jump on Riley as he goes out. I guess the hope is that the safety and corner play up field and Riley sneaks behind them but this isn't Division 2 football. The UMASS players are also on scholarship and they get coached too.
What I don't understand, to your point, is running this into the boundary. You have no numerical advantage and you are just crowding guys into space. Plus as we continue to say you started the play 5 yards deep so when daily gets the ball it's effectively 4th and 7 not 4th and 2 or 3 if you were under center. Truth is you probably could have run daily behind Riley as a blocker and gotten the 1st down at least.
The other thing is this, do you think Tyson Riley was the player to send out as a lone receiver? For god's sake he's a converted linebacker. Not that he can't catch but I don't think that's the ideal situation for him.
Also we have 9 guys trying to block 8 defenders. Riley is in double coverage and the middle backer is rushing Daily. I mean watch the play side tight end or slot technically. He looks to block the corner then misses the middle backer who forces daily to throw off his back foot. Same crap we've seen before where we aren't working pass protection from Inside out. That is simple coaching. Not to mention our right guard just gets run over. Good lord.
There is so much wrong on that 4th and 2 play it's just hard to even explain.

Re: UMASS highlight reel from the game.
Agree. The only way I see a pass working there is if Daily makes the play action then hits the receiver as he's crossing the line of scrimmage. Maybe that is what he was supposed to do. That was there, but the roll-out makes it impossible. Just a mess of a play.prideandream wrote: ↑Mon Oct 30, 2023 2:15 pm That's a pretty good assessment of that play in my opinion. Re: UMASS highlight reel from the game.
Nothing like watching a HORROR video after 5 straight defeats . My video library Horror shelves are now full for this year. No ore room left. What do I do?
Start winnin' !! Plenty room left for some joyful ones. Not only that but I won't have to dust empty shelves if we start to win.
