I agree with you that we are eventually going to one conference but I don’t see 64 teams. I see the top of the expanded SEC and the top of the expanded Big 10 leaving their respective conferences for a “Premier League“ type setup. This is how they can remove the lower-revenue producing schools like Indiana, Northwestern, Purdue, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, etc to drive more revenue per school. We may be 20 years out from that but tradition isn’t important anymore and money is driving everything.prideandream wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 11:14 pm Definitely going to impact us at some point. The ACC is locked in until 2036 unless the Grant of Rights gets challenged in courts. Plus there's a $120M exit fee. These are two major factors for FSU which wants out. I think FSU and Clemson are the best fits for the SEC. Miami maybe but probably a better fit in the Big 10. NC State never makes it to the SEC though. Even though GA Tech isn't a fit I could see them going SEC because Sankey values geographic contiguousness.
Money is going to ruin the college game. Tom Brady and Politics already ruined the NFL. At some point there will be one huge conference of like 64 teams which I think is the number. Then half of those would make the playoff and you get a 5 round 32 team college playoff of nothing but super schools.
I say this because I think that is what will maximize the profit motive for TV views. Every week that one of these top tier teams plays and FCS school or low level FBS schools is a lost opportunity for revenue. It's just a question of which schools, how many and how do they divide the money which will have to be evenly like the NFL. Then they can self govern and build in parity which is the NFL model that, like it or not, is ridicuously valuable.
Just my two cents. But I agree change is coming for everyone.

Re: Conference?
Will be interesting to see how this all shakes out. I think Army needs to see what happens with the ACC and the 4 remaining PAC-12 schools…is there a trend towards more independents from any of that fall out, a new conference, a larger ACC or other ripple effects.
TV money is obviously driving these changes but will fan bases be satisfied in a few years from some of these changes? Does a 3 or 4 loss Washington or Oregon ever make the playoffs, even in an expanded 12 team format? That’s a very likely normal year for them playing in the Big 10 against OSU, Mich, Penn St, USC, etc. A rich athletic department with nice facilities and well-paid coaches and players only gets you so far. Eventually you have to win games and compete for championships…at least for the fan bases of Oregon, Washington, USC, etc. The grass looks greener but look at Nebraskas experiment in the Big 10…some of these schools abandoning their regional conferences and traditions is going to result in being richer monetarily, but lots of mediocre seasons I think

Re: Conference?
Interesting points and could definitely see these scenarios playing out as well.
The question will be how do they sort it out because to maximize revenue you won't want lower level match ups. But what do you do when a Tulane or BYU or San Diego state goes undefeated in whatever league they wind up in and we start that controversy? Or will the lower leagues get some kind of automatic bid maybe? Don't know and I guess there's thousands of scenarios. Gonna get real interesting.
Need to kick off in Monroe here in a couple weeks.
Damn it may be ridiculously hot by kickoff

Re: Conference?
Let's start with Tom Brady is the devil.
Secondly this is totally off topic and likely deserves it's own thread.
Thirdly, this is jut my diatribe against one player I dislike.
Fourth, just to be really honest, rule changes in the NFL in my opinion have diminished the game and politics like Kapernick and all the equity and BLM and kneeling bullshit put a nail in the coffin of the NFL for me.
Ok, so the whole Tom Brady thing stems from from the 2008 Tom Brady rule that kept defenders on the ground from trying to take the legs out of offensive players.
Bottom line is that people got enamored with Brady and QBs and offensive production and so forth and forgot that the QB is 1 of 11 and should also be subjected to injury. A rule change specifically for one position undermines the whole idea of a team sport and the shared risk of playing the game. Imagine going to war there were rules against shooting the Platoon Leader. Not to try to equate the two but just think about that statement and concept. It's ludicrous.
Read this article from 2009 in the Bleacher Report and consider where we are today.
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/160 ... %20season.
Now the author's conclusions don't hold up but the changes to the rules around blocking seem to have. And many times we see rules trickle down from the NFL to the NCAA to High School.
So yes, Tom Brady is the devil and ruining football. Throw Kapernick in there too for politicizing the game.

Re: Conference?
I don’t disagree. I thought that Tuck Rule call Brady got in 2002 was ridiculous. There is no way they reverse that call if it had been the Raiders quarterback.prideandream wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 12:43 pm Let's start with Tom Brady is the devil.

Re: Conference?
Great. Where does all this end?
Let me guess - all these super-conferences can now split up into multiple divisions so instead of a conference championship game, we can now have a semi-final round and maybe a quarter final round. Maybe add a few wild-card teams to ensure that no one with 6 wins misses out on a chance to make it to the "Round of 12".
If anyone believes the Round of 12 is here to stay, I'll be happy to offer a good deal on my share of the Brooklyn Bridge. I'll even throw in the Golden Gate for anyone who believes any NFL prospects will actually participate in this endless marathon.
February Fever - Catch it!
