The old Mike Viti argument.
IMO there is no way he's qualified to be the next head coach or any head coach. His expeierence is way too limited. He's played at one school under a poor staff and on poor teams. He's only ever coached at one school albeit with some great teams and a great head coach and staff. He's also only coached one side of the ball. Even Monken had both ST and Offensive experience and coached HS and at a multitude of other schools and had prior HC experience. Whoever replaces Monken needs to have been a successful head coach at another FBS school or an extremely successful head coach at the FCS level.
You want to see a good back up plan? Go look at Navy and Drew Cronic. Compare his resume to Viti. Viti hasn't even been a coordinator. There is no amount of "Leadership" that is going to replace both the deep experience and expertise of a good seasoned coach. Not to mention the deep network it requires to build a staff. Where would Viti find other good coaches? I'm sure he has some connections but they can't look anything like Coach Monken's.
I'm not against Mike Viti coaching at Army. I just think his best move is to go gain broad experience at several other schools and maybe other levels. Build a network. Coach several different positions. Recruit the whole country. Build a resume of success that can't be questioned. Then come back and leverage all that to help Army Football.
I'm not sure any Army head coach has ever been routinely successful without having been a head coach somewhere else. And even then some of those didn't pan out well either.
The biggest issue is that the pool of guys to pull from that run a scheme like we do is likely getting smaller and smaller. Maybe I'm wrong but at least at the college level it can't be that many guys who have a grasp on what it takes to win at an Academy.
Just my two cents. But I also believe that the window has gotten infinitely small for Monken to leave. Last year was maybe his best chance at a P4 job. Maybe he can get a G5 job somewhere but without significant NIL and Transfer Portal Experience and in the future Roster Management Experience he's going to really start to fall behind skill wise. What it's going to take to be a HC going forward is not the same as in the past. That coupled with his style of play is going to be a tougher and tougher sell to any P4 school and likely to many of the most desirable G5 schools. Again, just my opinion.
