i thought the point of the option is to read the defense and go where the defense is not?

Sort of like Philly’s tush push. No mystery there but it doesn’t matter, no one can stop it. Although that is only 1 play.

The fundamental point of the option is to put a defender in conflict where any choice he makes is wrong. However properly defended with discipline and accountability it can makes it hard. The beauty of the true triple is that players stop playing assignment football and big plays break out. Because even when it's defended well it's still physical and demanding and usually moving the ball forward.
