My understanding of the lack of quality opponent als has to due with Conference tie-ins. This was supposed to be an AAC-Pac-12 game, but the Big 10 and ACC killed the PAC-12 last year.

I'll add that the Pac-12's current members kept their old bowl ties, same as Army. But the former Pac-12 had two teams get in the playoffs, and of the other members, only 5 made a bowl. Maybe we play Utah or Oregon State if they go 6-6, or Washington if Arizona State doesn't slide into the playoffs. Not sure that's better than Marshall, but those are the breaks.

Usma80 wrote: Sun Dec 08, 2024 4:17 pm Pure bullshit withaheart. I wouldn’t care where the damn bowl is played. This is a big middle finger by the league ( if they made the decision). Tulane who we absolutely took to the woodshed in the championship game and who has 3 losses plays Florida? Wtf? The Playoff Committee moved Tulane up to something like 16 and threw us out of the top 25 when we lost to ND. Or Gladchuck, who’s on the committee and hates our guts was doing his best to influence the rest of the clowns on the committee. Apparently, playoff style points for margin of a single loss counts more than actually beating EVERY conference opponent by sizeable margins. Politics is the author of the “fix that’s in” with all of the subjective decision-making going on. Don’t think I’m pissed at just learning of Army. I’m also really pissed to see Alabama in the playoffs. Both my kids are grads and we’re Bama fans right behind Army. They flat out didn’t deserve it. 3 losses, including Vanderbilt, who they hadn’t lost to in 27 years (I believe). But you could see that worthless Playoff Committee doing every to get them in with their rankings.
Alabama didn't make the playoff.

Marshall has had a lot of starters enter the portal. This game could be an Army blowout.

So far, 3 QBs in the portal. The starters who have entered so far: QB, RB, WR, 2 LBs, CB, and a safety. Several others, who appear to be backups as well.

Our AD signed a dopey contract that locked us into a bowl game that hasn't been relevant since the 1990s.
I feel like Mike Buddie flies under the radar due to Monken's excellence. Buddie is at best an average AD - people say Army was contracted to Indy Bowl and there wasn't much we could do... well he signed it. And the deal should have opt-outs and he SHOULD have connections to politick and work his way into a bowl game deserving of a 13 win team. He doesn't and he didn't.

AAC is a dog and I am not on the Buddie bandwagon, at all.
The Navy AD is not nice, but he gets the job done and makes the hard decisions. He has Navy playing premier opponents in bowl games. He landed Oklahoma this year. I bet we played nicely in the process and did not force the issue.

Beating Florida and Oklahoma does more for the program than defeating the Sun Belt champion. If they win, Navy will end up with more prestige this bowl season than us.
In hindsight, don't you find this a bit silly? "Navy will end up with more prestige this bowl season than us."

That is unfortunate. NIL has killed the concept of collegiate athletics, thanks to some judges who didn't understand the value of a college education for the majority of these players who would likely not be able to go without a scholarship.

Not at all. A bowl win over Oklahoma routs a victory over Marshall and will be more remembered.

Next year, people will know who won the AAC championship. Only Navy and Oklahoma will remember Navy being smoked by Oklahoma. Prestige, really?

Tons of guys from Oklahoma will be in the transfer portal too I'm sure. Or just opting out of the bowl if they have NFL aspirations this spring. If Navy wins, you can say "Hey, we beat the uniform" but in all reality the days of valuable non CFP bowl wins are probably gone. Maybe if Army played like Alabama that would be a different story, and I wish they were playing a more prestigious name in their bowl (or at least a full-strength Marshall team).

If Army wins Saturday, and wins their bowl big over a skeleton Marshall team, they'll be 13-1 with the CIC and a Conference Title, and probably end up ranked in the top 15. If Navy beats what would end up being a 6-7 Oklahoma team, sure it's better than if they beat Western Michigan or something, but it's not suddenly going to make their season better than Army's single-handedly.
