Air Force walked into yet another loss in Laramie last weekend to hand the Falcons (2-1) its first loss of the season. Nevada fell 27-0 at the hands of Iowa in a game that had three weather delays and, I believe, just finished yesterday.
Here are the three keys to an Air Force victory:
Hit Nevada Early
All joking aside, the Nevada game in Iowa didn’t finish until the very early hours of Sunday morning, thanks to weather delays. That game was in Iowa City, and then Nevada had to get home and turn around for a Friday night game against a triple-option offense that always requires extra time to prepare for.
Simply put, Nevada will not be ready for Air Force as the Falcons’ scheme early on in the game. If Air Force can get the option rolling early, it could be out of sight before Nevada gets itself sorted.
Grind It Out
Air Force is once again the best rushing team in the nation. The Falcons have rushed for 1,188 yards, and they are third in the country with just under 7 yards per rushing attempt. This, ironically, was the issue against Wyoming, a team built to defend from the rush outward that Air Force always has problems with.
Nevada should (theoretically) be less formidable in stopping the run. Brad Roberts is a monster at fullback, and his 7.13 yards per attempt and four touchdowns show that quarterback Haaziq Daniels is facilitating the run game perfectly. Expect close to 400 yards on the ground again here.
Stop The Run
Nevada also wants to run the ball. They have had injury issues - no team should have started six different guards at this point of the year - and as a result, their rushing attack hasn’t been what it promised coming into the season. Wyoming rushed for over 5 yards per carry last week against Air Force, and don’t be shocked to see the Wolf Pack try to follow the same blueprint here with talented running backs Toa Taua and Devonte Lee at the fore of their attack.
