Spring Practice

Post by WrekDivr »

I believe spring practice starts today. Anyone go see it? Any observations on the new offense? Other observations?

JM comments after 1st day of spring practice. Two comments I found interesting:

1. He expects fewer injuries during practice with the new offense
2. He expects Robinson to be ready to play in the fall, though TR may not be 100% for the first game.

Excellent interview. Coach is obviously motivated, as always. Great to hear that TR is doing well and on the mend! He's integral to our offense, imho, as a potential game-breaker on every touch and keeping opposing defenses spread out. I'm particularly excited to see how our new Offensive Coordinator(s) get the ball in the hands of guys like him and AJ Marshall more often. I'm also REALLY encouraged to hear Coach talk about how this new offense may actually cause fewer injuries than in the past. Injuries have been an Army scourge for years now. Even when we see the same linemen on the field week after week, they're often really dinged up and therefore less effective. Hopefully, this will be reduced.

Here's a follow-on interview with Bryson Daily by Charles Grevious from GBK.com:

I've heard second hand from people in the program that when they announced the switch, there was an uptick in recruits contacting Army. It does make sense, vast majority of QBs and lineman in HS football are in the shotgun now. I don't see it being a huge difference, but I bet we see a 10% increase versus navy and that alone might win a game or two.

I think that will depend a lot on performance this year, and the schedule is daunting for a new offense. My perception is that Army hasn't done too well in a very long time against middling-good defenses when trying to use wide gaps on offense. It will be interesting to see if we have lineman who can move their feet quick enough to make this offense work.

Ken Ktaetzer has some spring practice interviews posted on YouTube in case anyone missed them. I’ve posted a link to two below. In the first one Ken mentions that the team is running a lot of option plays. In the second Ay’Juan Marshall mentions that Coach Thatcher is focused on execution (thought P&D would appreciate that).

HA!

Yes I very much appreciate any focus on execution! Schemes are worthless without it.

Ken Kraetzer put out several videos covering spring ball. He mentions several times that there has been a lot of passing. In the early part of this video, JM mentions that more passing is a result of our shift to the new offense and the shotgun. Of course we could pass twice as much and still be run-dominant, but this is the first time JM has acknowledged a shift at all toward passing.
