Navy QB missing practices

Post by FSUBulldog0 »

Apparently the QB that ended atop the depth chart at the end of spring practice is missing practices due to summer school.

Tai Lavatai and Xavier Arline are 3 and 4 on the depth chart.

Apparently the article is paywalled unless you read it on Twitter. From Bill Wagner’s post on Twitter where there is no paywall

Teddy Gleaton has participated in just one Navy football practice so far this preseason and the chance he will remain the starting quarterback becomes more doubtful with each passing day.

Navy has been conducting morning practices since preseason training camp began last Wednesday with Gleaton unable to attend during the week because he is taking summer school classes during the day.

Tuesday morning’s practice was the sixth for Navy football and the fifth that Gleaton has missed. He participated in this past Saturday’s practice as summer school sessions are not held on weekends. Quarterbacks coach Ivin Jasper said the sophomore attends meetings whenever possible.

Navy football is not moving practices to the afternoon until Aug. 17, the first day of fall semester classes. Jasper did not mince words when asked if Gleaton is falling behind with each practice missed.

“Of course, he’s missing key reps,” Jasper said. “It is what it is. He’ll get back out here and get to work, but for right now it’s definitely not a positive for him.”

Jasper was uncertain when Gleaton will fully return to practice and acknowledged the situation makes it more difficult for him to earn the starting job for the season opener against Notre Dame on Aug. 26 in Dublin, Ireland.

“This camp is big for the football team, big for the offense and big for our togetherness. Not being here hurts, so it’s going to be hard,” Jasper said.

Gleaton was atop the depth chart throughout spring camp and took hundreds of live practice repetitions in 11-on-11 situations. He is a big quarterback (6-foot-1, 214 pounds) and has been likened to former Navy starter Ricky Dobbs in terms of playing style.

“Teddy is a strong runner and can really throw it around. He has a lot of tools in his chest,” Jasper said during the spring. “He reminds me of Ricky as far as throwing the ball. He also reminds me of Ricky when he does some bonehead things.”

With Gleaton sidelined, classmate Blake Horvath has ascended to the top of the depth chart and is taking practice repetitions with the starters. Senior Tai Lavatai is getting most of the second team reps, while classmate Xavier Arline and freshman Braxton Woodson are splitting the rest.

Horvath played in a triple-option offense at Hilliard Darby High in Ohio and was named second team All-State after rushing for 1,722 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior. He was second on the depth chart behind Gleaton following spring drills.

“Blake is getting better and better every day. Sometimes you have to believe what you see. He’s running the option well. He’s throwing the football better,” Jasper said. “His biggest thing is making good decisions and being consistent. He can make a really, really good play then make a really, really bad play. It’s my job to get him ready to play.”

Surprised how far Arline and Lavatai have fallen. I know they were hurt for spring ball, but seeing them pushed to 3 and 4 now is not what I would have expected.

Surprised me too. Especially since the QB coach hasn’t changed. I’d understand it more if the offensive staff had turnover due to the coaching change but Jasper is still the coach. Does that mean he picked the wrong guy last year?

Gleaton and Horvath are both sophomores, so perhaps Jasper did not want to start a true freshman last year. Perhaps they should have given their results - may have prevented the locker room bloodbath post Army Navy.

On second thought, Chuck was pretty eager to swing the axe, so it probably didn’t matter.
