Navy
Destroyed by Notre Dame. They were running the same base offense they have always run. Looked awful. I’m sure Notre Dame is legit, but Navy looked bad.

Re: Navy
Hopefully we're not seeing the beginning of a trend on "one and dones" like in the NBA. Only difference is that instead of letting 17 year old HS kids use college as a training ground for future millions, we can now see the "Big Boys" poach the smaller programs for 24 year old QBs for a year in order to add a few zeroes to their pro contracts.
Not to say that the game wasn't without it's moments of high comedy. On Navys very first drive, on a 4th down play the Middies had not one, but two receivers about 5 yards behind the defense. On a perfectly thrown ball by Lavatal, both receivers collided and knocked the ball away. It's not often that you see a teams offense knock down more passes than their defense did.

Re: Navy
That game went about as I hoped - Irish literally crushed the crabs; however, the larger issue for me is how would the squid offense be rated afterwards? Their defense was obviously and hopelessly hammered by a huge, strong ND line, and by explosive, powerful running backs, and by Hartman (who I seem to remember hung SEVENTY points on us at Michie and another 45 the next year at their place). But again, how would their offense be rated??
Would love to hear from P&D, who's bled and played in this game we love.
Specifically, did the cut block rules have the effect that Jeff maintains? Did they prevent the squids from getting the second level Irish defenders on the ground? Is that why the squids managed to gain only 150 ground yds through short gains up the gut and through pitches to the outside, but no breakaways, no sustained drives/TD's? Or, was it a case of simply being overmatched by the Irish D? Also, didn't see much of the "wrinkles" that Newberry claimed was installed by the new OC...
Finally, it'll be interesting to watch the zooms in a week, because they claim to have made zero changes to their under-center triple option (although they have a very patsy schedule)...

Re: Navy
A combination of a better team and the cut block rule. Every pitch out or option wa covered by a LB ofr other defensive back. Thanks TB for screwing the Academies and a few other schools. Now when are they going to outlaw the cut block tackle. At least a lineman or dback could defend himself. A ball carrier really can't.

Re: Navy
Navy looked fugly yesterday. Granted ND is legit ranked 13 but Navy looked really bad sticking to the Flexbone. Sports Center didn’t show a single Navy offensive play. There wasn’t anything to show. Army would look just as bad if they had stuck to it. They did look just as bad against WF last year. I don’t think Robinson staying injury free would have made much off a
difference I’m not saying the Gun Option will be successful, I hope and rationalize to myself that it will be, but a little hope is better than none. With Davis still at OC there would be no hope.

Re: Navy
I can't imagine a coaching genius like monken could be wrong about the impact of cut block rule changes. If he thinks the option is dead, i tend to believe him more than a Navy guy coaching his first game.
Navy looked really bad.
If you look at, for example, the 2016 Army Navy game and then look at a game from last year, it is a VERY noticeable difference. Back then, the lead back was cutting anything in his path (often at the size of kell). If Kell tries to take on a guy full size in 2023, he gets run over. In 2016, he cuts him down. That is ALL the difference in the world.I love the option, ran it myself back in the day, and am sad to see it go.
But I also don't think we are asking the impossible to beat the Navy's and ULM's and mid-majors of the world, in any type of offense, if we execute. We aren't playing the SEC west schedule (although this year is tough but, even then, we have very beatable Syracus and BC as 2 of our 3 toughest games).

Re: Navy
Ant 6th year college football player at 24 years of age should not be playing against 18-19 year old player who have never seen a football player in college. Guys like this Sam Hartman should be done in college. How many years does this guy get?
This guy plays in the Wake Forest system for 5 years and he transfers to Notre Dame for another year because Notre Dame lost their prized QB so they pick up a Guy like Hartman. Geez, I guess Notre Dame wants somebody to win a national championship for them. something this team has not done in the past 35 years !!!
Who is anybody kidding with this crap.
Hartman has had enough reps to play for the pros. If he doesn't make a pro team, no tears here.
Hey Sam, go out and get a real job.! 24 years old and still in college. That's a disgrace. You get a free ride at Wake Forest for 5 years and then switch to a team, any team, for 1 more year is a travesty.
Ok if you spent 4 years in the military, but Hartman did no such thing.
Basically, I call this BULLSHI* !!
Don't pile on me because it is Notre Dame. It should not be done for any team. Pooching is bull crap and should be eliminated completely. Of course, the NCAA is a bunch of screwballs anyway. You take it where it comes from.

Re: Navy
The Hartman situation you accurately describe tells you all you need to know about the state of college football today. I viewed 2021 as the last year of college football as we knew it. But that’s a different discussion. Did you watch Navy get dismantled yesterday? If so, what did you think?

Re: Navy
Who cares? If Hartman wants to play his COVID year and make NIL money instead of NFL money, go for it. I'm sure it's A LOT more fun being a BMOC as the starting QB at ND than a backup for an NFL team. It's his choice, and it's not against any NCAA rules, so let it go.
I think that this may be the last year of players with the extra COVID year, so we won't see the 5th and 6th year seniors anymore. But it's obviously an unintended (?) consequence of the transfer portal, but I doubt the NCAA will do anything to fix it.
