Navy beats Memphis

Post by WrekDivr »

I watched some of the game where Navy beat Memphis 56-44 and there offense definitely looked different. They threw for 205 yards (out of 566 total) and LOST the TOP battle by 11 minutes. Not the usual formula for winning as a SA being a 9-point underdog.

Their QB, Horvath, ran for 211 yards and 4 TDs along with going 9 for 12 passing with 2 TDs. They ran the flexbone along with the wing-T. If this is not a fluke they will be a challenge to beat having a QB that can complete long and short passes and run when needed.

When I saw that score, I thought "Navy's back". Shaping up to be an epic showdown at the end of the year with potentially the best teams either academy has fielded in a number of years.

Kudos to the squids for the win. But shame on the Memphis DC. Their defense looked pitifully unprepared as though the scout team had run something entirely different than Navy all week. Memphis defense was repeatedly out of position, confused, bad alignment on gap coverage along the line of scrimmage, and I could go on... But, honestly, Navy's defense played poorly as well. The difference in this game was that Navy made 2-3 timely plays on defense exactly when they needed to whereas Memphis did not. The last two timely defensive plays by Navy were more on Memphis making a mistake - dropped passes inside the Navy 10 in the 4th and then simply a terrible attempt by the QB on the final drive to force the ball downfield into coverage when they still had plenty of time, good field position, and a timeout.

Regardless, Navy's offense is legit and Horvath is starting to remind me of Malcolm Perry (god forbid). Head to head I think Army is better overall at this point of the season. If Navy's defense improves it will close the gap big time between the two teams. The rest of the season and, especially, A-N looks to be for some sweating bullet moments.

I watched a good bit of this game as well. Drew Cronic's hand in the offense is readily apparent. The over schemes they run in heavy sets are very typical of what he likes to do and sometimes he runs behind that heavy set but also runs counter to it which creates some big seams. I agree that Memphis looked woefully unprepared for many of these looks. Horvath looked fast as well and I agree remind me of Malcolm Perry

Truth is we won't really know what we have or they have until we see a little more. Rice is awful and I wish we had put up a couple more TDs yesterday vs them.

Memphis on offense looked terrible for most of the game, three incompletions and a punt must have been the game plan. On defense Memphis was like a deer in headlights for the entire game and it kind of reminded me of Coastal Carolina's game against Army last year. IMHO Memphis is completely overrated and it more than showed up on the playing field against Navy. Navy definitely played a good game and it was a great win against a team that was suppose to beat Navy, but at the end of the game Memphis had an excellent chance to pull it out only to fall on flat on their face.
There's still a long time left in the football season so we will see how both QB's Dailey & Horvath can perform against defensive teams that can stop the TO offense. Plus, injuries will be a major factor especially late in the year for both Army & Navy.

Not sure which game you watched. Memphis had 659 yards of total offense with two 100+ yard rushers and two 100+ yard receviers as well as 44 points.
