Elephant In Room - Monken, Worley Others Will Leave For P4

Regardless of the outcome of the next 3 games - Monken, Worley, and other Army Coaches will get attention / offers.

Moken has contributed to the tombstones for many HCs in his career - look at the AAC just this season - incredible.We all know this.

If this be so, then Army is finished with anything but the CIC Trophy. Forget anything else as it was and be happy. If our great coaches leave, throw in the towel. The GLORY was one year. Be happy we are having it.
If another good coach is successful, he too will leave, we ger so-so again and this cycle will repeat over and over again.
It is the history of modern- day Army Football.
If you are an Army fan, bear it. It is just the way it is in this modern world of our favorite football team.
Dreams are really reality in disguise.

Jeez Rabble…so much doom and gloom. One only needs to look at our two sister service academies to see examples of coaching successes through multiple coaches:

Navy: Johnson to Niumatalolo to Newberry (granted just 1 good season so far, but they are 8-3 and were nationally ranked this season)

Air Force: Hatfield to DeBerry to Calhoun

Army made some bad hires. AF and Navy didn’t. Simple as that and whenever Monken leaves, there is no reason the West Point leadership can’t make a good decision on his replacement.

Monken built a culture and surrounded himself with folks who bought into it much like Paul Johnson at Navy. There is somebody on staff who has been around for awhile who would be ready to take over. I’m sure Monken would take some of his guys with him but not everyone.

Not to belittle this season, but JM caught lightning in a bottle this year with Daily. Add a very weak schedule to that, and you have a historic season.

I just don't see the market for a coach that tried a non-option offense that ended up being a complete failure. Maybe it would be different with different athletes. But, based on his record, he's an option coach first and foremost, and there's nothing wrong with that. But what P4 team wants to run that offense? Or will put up with it? PJ was basically shown the door at GT despite having success.

And JM still doesn't have a signature win.

Look, I'm all for maximizing earning. If he gets a better offer, hats off to him and congrats for all the hard work. Get as much guaranteed money as you can, and as high of a buyout as you can.

But I don't see it happening.

Yeah, I'm not saying he's not deserving, and if gets an offer he wants to take, he's entitled to go, and we should all congratulate him. He's succeeded here at a level no one could have reasonably expected.

But by my count, there's 67 Power 4 schools. How many of them are going to have openings this year? From there, how many are truly going to consider a 58 year old coach who's success has been in a very specific and unique environment that's really not comparable to the environment at most P4 schools, on the field or off.

Not trying to diminish him at all, but I don't think he's necessarily the slam dunk candidate for a Power 4 job that a lot of people think he might be.

Kind of dream job he has at WooPoo considering current culture. Making a 2+ mil salary, and good young men to coach in world class facilities, minimal transfer churn, low expectations (relatively), kind of getting long in the tooth, and you live in a mansion behind Lusk on one of the most iconic locations in the world. Different perspective here.

Large are the balls of an AD who hires monken. There is a reason ken never left navy.

He’s earned it…but i’ll still be surprised if someone pulls the trigger

The biggest thing is this: in college football in 2024, the most important two things are NIL and the transfer portal, and Monken has zero experience with either one of them. This is a huge factor in the hiring process.

Yeah, to echo wpgrad, its major risk/reward. Nebraska showed in the 90s you can be elite running the option. But this is a different era. Could it work? Absolutely, but you'd need a big brand that is down, but with an AD willing to put his job on the line. Places like Rutgers, Northwestern, Kansas, Baylor, etc. are not going to be able to recruit elite RBs and OL the way Nebraska did. You'd need a school like a Florida to be able to recruit at that level and they are not going to risk it. I just don't see a school like Rutgers or Vandy giving JM the runway to implement the system to a level where it would actually work. He'd get 2-3 years, max.

As JM tenure goes on and the more I hear him talk about West Point. I
think he is a lifer. Yes, his name will get thrown in on smaller P4 team
search, his agent at work. Army will give him another extension and raise.
