Our oldest son is an Oregon State grad and was there when Jonathan Smith (current Mich State coach who rebuilt OSU) was QB on OSU team that crushed Norte Dame in Fiesta Bowl ending season ranked #2. Our son has a few friends who were on that team. He and an OL friend watched the Mich State FAU game, and he asked his friend for some comments once he found out Army would be playing them.
FAU O—QB is bad passer, at least v. MSU D. MSU good at press coverage. QB had three passes—one for TD and one for 25 yards when MSU secondary screwed up coverage. HS QB could have made those completions. The third pass I liked was excellent in tight window. QB is really good runner—he likes to slide late, just as he’s about to get hit. That drew three flags on MSU D and bailed out FAU O. Against AAC D’s he might do all right and will complete more passes. FAU RBs could not do anything early, so they went to QB runs. RBs had good runs about 25% of carries but will do better against weaker D.
FAU D—one DE is really quick, MSU should have run counters v. him to slow him down. Can’t believe JS didn’t do that!! Their LBs are generally sound in assignments, one had good speed. Their DBs do a good job of jamming at LOS. MSU bailed out FAU D because JS loves deep throws. They had 6 that I recall—2 INTs and 2 PIs and one completion. MSU QB had one good throw on deep balls. MSU fumbled in RZ, and early in 4Q had 4th and 1 at the 10. JS should have klcked the chip shot and then would have had 9 point lead but he is gunslinger and went for TD. Bad play call- slow and FAU sold out to the RB who never had a chance. If JS had gone more conservative in play calling—short quick passes, roll out RPO and runs—MSU scores 4 TDs. But that’s not who he is, remember how he cost us the Purdue game?
FAU scouting report (sort of)
