The Trumpet Man

Post by BEATNAVY09 »

I was wondering if anyone knows if the Trumpet Man still attends games at Michie and fires up the cadets. I haven’t been to a game at Michie since I was a cadet in 2008. Along with Crazy Colonel, he was one of two super fans that always got the cadets fired up.

I’m also curious if he had some relationship with the program or just a fan. I don’t know his name.

When I was a cadet he was called the “Drunk Bugler”. The Corps used to be seated on the west side and he would be in the upper deck above the Corps. We would call up to him a few times a game: “Drunk Bugler rocket” and he would balance precariously on the railings and lead us in a cheer. How he survived all those years…from at least the 80’s until your cadet years apparently, who knows?! I haven’t seen him in any games I’ve attended in recent years. Maybe when they moved the Corps across to the east stands he lost interest since his perch above the cadets was gone?

He was definitely a game day institution for many years!

I was too early for the Trumpet Man. Back in my cadet days (late 1970's), The Corps would get fired up by the Hawthorne Caballeros' half-time show. Excellent Drum and Bugle Corps, but the thing that sticks out in my memory the most is the drum major on the ladder along the sidelines, wearing a green satin cape, and keeping time for the marching band on the field. Great Saturday memories - first, SAMI (Saturday AM Inspection) in the barracks, then Saturday morning classes, then the parade (full Corps, all four regiments), then the football game!

I spoke with him at the large tail gate above Lusk before the Air Force game. Not sure he had the trumpet, but he is at most games.

Yes, the memory of Saturday morning classes has to prove that some changes are okay.

I Know One Trumpet Man

Post by apgarme »

Hi All - The Trumpet Man that I know is Tom Lynch. He is a 1983 or 1984 graduate, and was a teammate of mine on the Army soccer team. He was a very talented and courageous goal keeper. I have only been to a few games at Michie over the years, but I always go to the Army-Navy game. I have seen Tom with his trumpet at the Army-Navy game, but I am not sure that he is the same trumpeter about whom you are speaking.
