The Athletic ranked the G5 Football HC’s. JM is ranked #3 behind Jamie Chadwell (Liberty) and Jon Sumrall (Tulane). The Zoomies’ TC comes in at #6. The Squids’ HC didn’t make the list, but their old coach KN (San Jose State) is #19.

Re: Group of 5 Head Coach Rankings
It is great to see Coach Monken receive that recognition, but I am concerned that he may no longer be satisfied with his current position. I base that concern on his not dismissing reports of him being looked at for other coaching jobs last December. I wonder if his decision not to dismiss the reports means that he was seriously thinking of leaving, and if the reports negatively impacted recruiting. I hope that he stays for the unforseeable future and does not go the route of George Welch and Paul Johnson. I think that Coach Monken is good for West Point and that West Point is good for Coach Monken.

Monken is the greatest coach in Army history. And he’s given us far more than taken
That said, I thought his public comments (and ADs comments) about him “deserving to leave” and being interviewed and all that stuff directly contributed to our poor navy performance. Even if that impacted our players 5-10% in terms of buy-in or mental attitude, versus navy we dont have 5% to give and if your coach is interviewing the week of Navy while also spouting off all the brotherhood stuff…our kids arent stupid

Re: Group of 5 Head Coach Rankings
Agree with all: Coach has almost single handedly transformed if not saved Army Football. It's hard to recall the depths to which the program had fallen before JM was hired and it's recent successes were almost unimaginable in those dark times.
But its also obvious that his eagerness to depart the team to seemingly pursue any opportunity outside of WP has to be disruptive to the entire program, especially the players. As he and multiple sources have verified JM was a candidate for several head coaching openings in the several weeks before Army Navy. Obviously the players were aware of those efforts and must have discussed them among themselves. And consider the effect of those searches on the assistant coaches - how could they fully focus on the Navy game when all, especially those with families, are wondering if they will be employed after the Army/Navy game. Do they need to start putting out their own feelers for new positions elsewhere ? Will JM take any with him if he gets a new gig ? Will the new Army HC retain any of them ? It would be completely understandable for the staff to look at game prep for Navy as secondary to what may come to their personal lives. Really an untenable situation...
Of course Coach Monken cannot control the calendar nor when or how other coaching opportunities may arise and few can fault Coach for looking to expand his options and to reach for greater challenges and the likely compensation increase that will result. But, it would be naive to think the yearly dalliance with leaving is not impactful.
Maybe the cycle in 2025 will be different. Coach will be 58 in a month and age perhaps will reduce his suitors. One would also expect that the number of his swings and misses for new HC jobs over the last 4-5 years (10 or so if the reports are close to accurate) may further minimize his chances to depart.
Regardless of those reasons, I'd welcome a season with no reports of JM's potential departure.

My apologies to those coaches who excelled 90 friggin years ago when there were no facemasks or black players and during Blaiks time he had the colossal advantage of WW2. I had to look up Daly, didnt event know who that was then found out you are talking about 100 years ago lol.Oliphant wrote: ↑Sun Mar 16, 2025 9:23 pmWhat an insult to Coaches Blaik and Daly.wpgrad wrote: ↑Sun Mar 16, 2025 12:05 pm Monken is the greatest coach in Army history.
