AF Loss and Navy Win

Post by WrekDivr »

AF lost another game where they were favored and provided Wyoming their first win of the year. The AF O gained 200 yards on the ground and averaged 4.5 yards per carry - stats similar to Navy’s in their win (see below). However, AF was 5/12 on 3rd down and 0/2 on fourth down. I didn’t see any of this game so I can’t add much color.

Navy again scores a bunch of points beating UAB 41-18. I caught a little bit of this game and Navy’s O was working Luka you would expect a TO offense to: getting to 3rd and short and converting. I was surprised when I looked at the stats and their 400+ yards were about evenly split between rushing and passing. Looks like Horvath had two long TD passes that were 160 yards combined. In that case, their 200 yards rushing looks weaker than I thought they looked. It seems like the big difference in that game was mistakes by UAB: 2 interceptions and 3 fumbles (they recovered all the fumbles) as well as nearly 100 yards in penalties. My takeaway is that Navy has a very good offense, but their D is unproven. UAB averaged 4.5 yards per rush, which isn’t bad.

I didn't see Air Force but the stats point to them struggling but maybe improving.

Navy on the other hand looked formidable and Horvath has been lights out. He's fast too. much faster than Daily. Drew Cronic is already having a significant impact on their offensive production. That is clear from watching most of the UAB game and some from the week before. He's a really good coach and creative offensively.

On the other hand, Trent Dilfer at UAB is not a good coach and they are horrible. So only time will tell. We may not really know the caliber of either Army or Navy until we see them both play ND. But we will see. Right now all this really bad competition makes it hard to see what either team has.

UAB is bad but Memphis is pretty darn good and Navy put up 560 yards against them. Their new offense is pretty different and Horvath the QB is a stud. I think for both teams, keeping the QB healthy is huge cause the entire offense is run through them.

Horvath’s stats are impressive. He and Daily have the same number of rushing TDs (8) and similar rushing yards (450 vs. 492 for Daily) on significantly fewer carries (47 vs. 82 for Daily). Additionally, Horvath has 637 yards and 7 TDs passing.

I wouldn’t trade Daily for 2 Horvaths, but I have to say that his stats are pretty strong. But then so was AF’s QB stats last year and we broke him in two. Pretty sure he hasn’t fully recovered yet.

Navy looks great so far. They’re garnering a few more top 25 votes in both the AP and Coaches poll, than Army is and I think it is deserved.

Air Force, on the other hand, looks like a steaming pile of bird crap and I couldn’t be happier about it.
