Finally, a 2-0 week, even if it means another AAC loss for the Mids. It is Navy’s turn to play neutral site football this week after Air Force did just enough to beat Army – and win the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy in Dallas last weekend.
Week Results: 2-0.
Closest Pick: Air Force 24, Army 21. The score was way lower than I expected, but I did call it less than a touchdown as Air Force beat Army 13 to 7.
Worst Pick: Cincinnati 38, Navy 20. The actual was Cincinnati 20, Navy 10 as the Mids defense was solid, but the offense (again) couldn’t get anything going consistently enough to matter.
Season Results: 14-7 (66%). Last week I was at 63%
Notre Dame @ Navy (in Baltimore) – Always one of the more fun games on the Navy schedule, the Mids take on No. 20 Notre Dame in Baltimore on Saturday. The Irish just blasted Clemson for 263 yards on the ground in a 35-1 win that humbled the Tigers. They only give up 3.8 yards per carry and 125 yards per game on the ground this season, numbers that Navy will have to crush to stand a chance here. Navy has lost three of four and couldn’t top 180 yards on the ground against Cincinnati last time out. This one could be rough. Notre Dame 35, Navy 14.
Army @ Troy – Troy is great against the run – they have only given up over 100 yards three times all year – but Louisana pounded away for 203 yards in their last game. Army is still averaging over 300 yards per game on the ground and the Black Knights win this if they convert at nearly 40% of third downs instead of their 4-of-14 effort against the Falcons last time out. Army 31, Troy 28.
Air Force vs. New Mexico – Air Force is rolling with the win over Army securing bowl eligibility along with a nice shiny trophy. New Mexico is not rolling. The Lobos have lost six straight, all heavily. Getting the offense firing early will be huge, while the special teams need to clean up a touch after mistakes – a missed field goal and a punt that should have been blocked – against Army. The Mountain West has been a minefield for Air Force in 2022, but I think they have more than enough to avoid a stumble here. Air Force 35, New Mexico 17.
